March 24, 2020 – MVE + Partners (MVE), a leading architecture, planning, interiors, and graphic design firm, proudly announces the return of licensed architect Timothy Smallwood as a senior associate partner and the firm’s new director of institutional services. With over 20 years of institutional and residential design experience and a keen understanding of the firm’s mission, vision and values as a former MVE employee, Smallwood will help expand the firm’s institutional architecture and design studio across Southern California and beyond.
From 2000-2006, Smallwood served as an associate and project director at MVE where he helped the firm complete numerous residential, commercial office and institutional projects. Since that time, he has served in a variety of management positions at architectural firms including Robert Hidey Architects, LPA and KTGY. Over a decade later, with a wealth of industry knowledge and leadership experience, Smallwood rejoins MVE in a new and enhanced managerial role.
“We’re excited to welcome Timothy Smallwood back as the newest member of MVE’s leadership team,” said Matt McLarand, president, MVE. “Not only does he bring over two decades of design expertise, but he truly embodies our culture and has a deep understanding of our business philosophy, allowing him to successfully lead and elevate our institutional architecture practice.”
As Director of Institutional Services, Smallwood will utilize his experience to strengthen and diversify the firm’s portfolio across various institutional property types, provide business development support and cultivate relationships with key developers, consultants, contractors and jurisdictional and approval agencies. He will also be instrumental in selecting and engaging interdisciplinary consultant teams, monitoring their involvement and ensuring coordination of site and building systems throughout the duration of a project.
A LEED accredited professional, Smallwood specializes in sustainable design practices enabling him to create spaces that promote health and wellness. His proficiency in building code and Division of the State Architect (DSA) compliance will also help streamline processing timelines and save costs for MVE clientele.
“I am honored to join MVE’s leadership team and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside some of the industry’s top architects and design professionals,” said Smallwood. “I look forward to helping MVE grow its institutional studio and supporting the firm’s commitment to sustainability through exceptional design.”
Smallwood is involved in a variety of industry organizations including the United States Green Building Council; Urban Land Institute; Coalition for Adequate School Housing and the American Institute of Architects where he previously served the Orange County Chapter as 2018 president, executive committee member and sat on the board of directors for nearly a decade. He also served as Director-at-Large on the American Institute of Architects – California Council.
Smallwood earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California and studied urban design and architecture in Como, Italy. In his free time, he enjoys surfing, mountain biking, golfing, backpacking and spending time with family and friends.
